Overview
The Geezer Guide is a privacy-first senior care marketplace enabling families to independently search, compare, and evaluate senior living facilities through transparent pricing, verified profiles, and community reviews, all without aggressive sales tactics or lead generation pressure. Built for families facing one of the most important decisions of their lives, the platform puts control, clarity, and trust at the center of the senior care discovery experience.
Founded by Jeremy Tomsic in Grapevine, Texas, The Geezer Guide was developed as a Zillow-inspired discovery model for senior living, where families can explore facilities on their own terms. The platform features automated monthly HHS data ingestion, claim-based facility verification, location-based search with dual map and list views, a moderated review system, and WCAG 2.1 AA compliant elder-friendly interfaces built for accessibility and trust.
Background
Finding the right senior living facility for a loved one is one of the most emotionally charged and consequential decisions a family can make. Yet the traditional senior care discovery process has been dominated by lead generation platforms that sell family contact information to facilities, exposing them to aggressive sales calls, limited transparency on pricing, and biased search results driven by advertising spend rather than genuine quality.
Jeremy Tomsic identified this fundamental problem in the senior care market and set out to build The Geezer Guide as an honest alternative. Inspired by the transparent, user-controlled discovery model of Zillow in real estate, The Geezer Guide applies the same philosophy to senior care, giving families verified data, transparent pricing, community reviews, and full privacy while they research and compare facilities at their own pace, free from sales pressure.
Project Objectives
The collaboration with The Geezer Guide aimed to:
- Build a privacy-first Progressive Web Application enabling families to search, compare, and evaluate senior living facilities independently without lead generation or sales pressure.
- Develop automated HHS data ingestion with intelligent duplicate detection to maintain a comprehensive, accurate, and current database of senior living facilities nationwide.
- Implement a claim-based facility verification system with admin approval workflows, allowing facility owners to verify and manage their profiles with trust-building verified badges.
- Build location-based search with dual map and list views, multi-parameter filtering, and facility-saving functionality for efficient, user-controlled discovery.
- Create a moderated review system with star ratings, photo uploads, and premium owner response capabilities to drive community-driven, transparent decision-making.
- Design WCAG 2.1 AA compliant, elder-friendly interfaces with adjustable fonts, high-contrast modes, larger touch targets, and simplified navigation for seniors with varying technical abilities.
- Integrate a scalable monetization framework supporting future subscription tiers, featured placements, analytics dashboards, and payment processing.
Challenges
Developing The Geezer Guide surfaced a unique combination of data, compliance, design, and trust challenges specific to the sensitive senior care sector:
- Complex HHS Data Integration: Integrating complex HHS data with inconsistent spreadsheet formats required building intelligent duplicate detection and data normalization systems to maintain a reliable, accurate facility database.
- Trust in Sensitive Healthcare Decisions: Building genuine user trust in a high-stakes healthcare context required strict HIPAA and GDPR compliance, transparent data practices, and a visible commitment to privacy throughout every touchpoint of the platform.
- Facility Verification Workflows: Balancing a thorough facility owner verification and claim-based ownership system with a user-friendly, efficient process for facility administrators required careful workflow design and admin approval architecture.
- Elder-Friendly Accessibility: Designing interfaces accessible to seniors with varying levels of technical ability required larger touch targets, simplified navigation, clear visual hierarchy, adjustable fonts, and high-contrast display options meeting WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
- Complex Facility Data Presentation: Presenting complex facility data including pricing, amenities, and care types in scannable, non-overwhelming layouts required a carefully structured information architecture that informed without confusing.
- Search Simplicity Across Devices: Balancing comprehensive multi-parameter search filters with a mobile-first, simple experience across varying screen sizes demanded thoughtful responsive design and progressive disclosure of filtering options.
- Trust Signals Without Visual Clutter: Creating strong trust signals such as verified badges and transparent pricing displays without cluttering a clean, healthcare-appropriate minimalist design required deliberate visual hierarchy decisions.
