Wait4Me is an on-demand personal assistant marketplace where clients post tasks and assistants bid to complete them. Users can act as clients, assistants, or both within the same platform, supported by built-in real-time chat, secure payment processing, and a bidirectional review system. The platform connects people who need errands handled, queues managed, or tasks completed with nearby, verified assistants ready to bid and deliver.

Built for Chris Gordon in Marina Del Rey, California, Wait4Me was developed as a full-featured, location-aware gig economy marketplace with a clean mobile-first experience. The platform was built on Flutter and Dart for cross-platform mobile delivery, Node.js with TypeScript on the backend, and a clean architecture foundation using GetX state management, the repository pattern, and dependency injection via GetIt across multiple API environments.

Background

The gig economy has expanded rapidly across the United States, driven by demand for flexible, on-demand services that fit into busy modern lifestyles. While platforms exist for specific service categories, there was a clear gap for a flexible, task-based marketplace where individuals could post any personal assistant task, from standing in queues to handling errands, and receive competitive bids from nearby, qualified assistants.

Chris Gordon founded Wait4Me to fill this gap with a dual-role marketplace that gives users full flexibility. A user can post a task as a client one day and browse available assignments as an assistant the next. The platform prioritizes trust, transparency, and real-time coordination through verified profiles, transparent pricing, live chat, location-based matching, and a comprehensive bidding and assignment management system built for both sides of the marketplace.

Project Objectives

The collaboration with Wait4Me aimed to:

  • Build a cross-platform Flutter mobile app for iOS and Android supporting dual user roles (client and assistant) within a single, unified platform experience.
  • Develop a full assignment management system covering task creation, editing, status tracking, bidding, search, and multi-parameter filtering.
  • Implement real-time communication using Socket.IO for live chat, inbox management, online status indicators, and push notifications via Firebase.
  • Integrate secure payment processing via PayPal including payment release workflows, transaction history, tips, and promo code support.
  • Build location services using Google Maps for caregiver proximity search, location selection, and multi-location task support.
  • Implement advanced authentication including social login via Apple and Google, OTP verification, profile management, and account deletion.
  • Deliver advanced features including AppsFlyer attribution tracking, a paid search onboarding flow, Firebase Remote Config for version management, iOS quick actions, a bidirectional review system, and comprehensive media handling.
  • Architect the codebase following clean architecture principles with Data, Domain, and View layers for long-term maintainability and scalability.

Challenges

Developing Wait4Me presented a unique set of design and technical challenges rooted in its real-time, location-based, dual-role service model:

  • Building Trust at Every Touchpoint: Since the service involves real-world tasks including standing in queues and handling errands, building trust through clear profiles, transparent pricing, secure payments, visible cancellation policies, and a reliable rating system was critical to user adoption.
  • Real-Time Chat Complexity: Integrating live chat added a significant layer of complexity, requiring intuitive communication flows that felt immediate and reliable while preventing misuse and maintaining conversational clarity across both user roles.
  • Real-Time Status Updates: The platform needed to handle real-time status updates across booking confirmation, task progress, and completion in a clear, non-intrusive manner that kept both clients and assistants informed without overwhelming their experience.
  • Dual-Role Navigation Design: Designing for two distinct user roles within the same interface ecosystem required careful role-based navigation, distinct dashboard experiences, and seamless switching between client and assistant modes.

1. Cross-Platform Flutter Mobile App

  • Developed a high-performance Flutter and Dart mobile application for iOS and Android, supporting both client and assistant roles within a single, cohesive interface ecosystem.

  • Implemented real-time assignment status tracking providing clients and assistants with clear, up-to-date visibility into task progress from bid acceptance through to completion.

3. Real-Time Chat and Notifications

  • Implemented real-time bidirectional chat using Socket.IO, providing immediate and reliable communication between clients and assistants with online status indicators and inbox management.
  • Integrated Firebase push notifications to deliver timely alerts for bid updates, booking confirmations, task status changes, and message receipts without overwhelming users.
  • Designed intuitive chat interfaces that maintained conversational clarity for both user roles while preventing misuse through platform-level communication controls.

4. Payment Integration and Transaction Management

  • Integrated PayPal payment processing with a secure escrow-style payment release workflow, ensuring assistants received payment only upon task completion and client confirmation.
  • Built a full transaction history system allowing users to review past payments, released funds, tips received, and promo code redemptions from within the app.

5. Location Services and Google Maps Integration

  • Built location selection tools and multi-location task support for assignments requiring assistance across more than one location or involving movement-based errands.
  • Optimized location-based matching to surface the most relevant and available nearby assistants quickly and accurately across the platform.

6. Authentication and User Management

  • Implemented multi-method authentication including social login via Apple and Google, OTP-based verification, and full profile management with user preferences and account deletion support.
  • Built user management tools including block and report functionality to protect platform integrity and give users control over their interaction environment.
  • Integrated AppsFlyer attribution tracking to accurately measure paid versus organic install performance and optimize user acquisition strategies.

7. Advanced Platform Features

  • Implemented a Firebase Remote Config-powered version update system supporting both force and optional app updates, ensuring all users operated on supported platform versions.
